THERE is an overwhelming preference among Indian students to pursue engineering courses in the United States. A post-graduate degree acquired in the U.S. is supposed to ensure a good career. Next to the U.S., the United Kingdom and Australia, Singapore in the last few years have been attracting students from India.
According to the website of the United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI), there were 80,466 students from India studying in the U.S. in the academic year 2004-05, which was 1 per cent more than the previous year's. Of this, graduate students numbered 57,976, undergraduates 16,443 and others 6,047Four years ago, India surpassed China in the number of students it sent to the U.S. In the U.K., there were about 16,500 Indian students in 2005 compared to about 14,000 in 2004. Australia has also seen a big jump in the number of Indian students reading there. There are about 20,000 Indian students in different universities there. Of them, 10,000 joined in 2005.
The British Council, India - Education UK website says that if an Indian student is considering an education in the U.K., he or she should visit an Education UK exhibition, which provides information on the entire spectrum of courses available in a number of universities there. Besides, it provides an opportunity to Indian students to talk to academics and representatives of schools, colleges and universities in the U.K., the website says. They provide information about the courses available in their institutions, admission requirements, facilities and services.
In recent years, Indian students are enrolling themselves for engineering courses in Singapore. The Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) - a top private school in Singapore - has 8,500 students from 41 countries. Of them, Indian students account for 100. MDIS offers about 80 courses of study, which are recognised the world over. It has collaboration with nine universities in the U.K., the U.S., Australia and France. The courses include Business Management, Marketing, Accounting and Finance, International Business, Communication and IT, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Management, Biotechnology, and Travel and Tourism.
To celebrate its golden jubilee, which falls this year, MDIS offers 50 scholarships to top Asian students from 14 countries. The scholarships will enable Indian students, among others, to study in the University of Bradford and University of Wales, both in the U.K.; Edith Cowan University and Macquarie University (both in Australia), Ottawa University and Oklahoma City University (both in the U.S.). The value of scholarships ranges from S $5,000 to $10,000. More information is available at www.mdis.edu.sg
