Attack on academics

Frontline has done a great service by drawing attention to the criticisms against Western academics in recent years ("Virtual assaults," January 28). However, the brief article lacks balance and nuance because it unreservedly paints all the academics as helpless victims, and identifies all their critics as synonymous with "the Hindu Right in Indian politics."Neither of these portraits is accurate. There are many Western academics who have been wrongly targeted. A case in point is Fr. Francis X. Clooney, a serious, sincere and honest academic whose integrity and scholarship are unquestionable. The attack on him was not only misguided but also deplorable. He deserves an apology from those who suspected his motive and work. His contribution to make Hindu theology accessible and understandable to the West is immense and his approach has consistently been respectful as well as objective.

Attempts to correct misperceptions and misrepresentations of Hinduism are increasingly being dismissed and derided in the West as coming from "Hindutva" people, or those with a political agenda.

New look

Better late than never. Frontline's redesign was long overdue. The logo in black and white is most inviting.

The new design was on expected lines. I request to you add new features and new columns by people from different walks of life and give more coverage to education-related topics.

Perfect. Now, Frontline is complete.

The first thing that I should appreciate is the provision of more space between the lines and letters

There can be no dispute that Frontline is a magazine with a difference. The attractive changes made in the design have enhanced its readability and elegance.

V. K. Sathyavan Nair

Frontline has been excitingly reinvented. In my library I have the first issue of the magazine dated December 1-14, 1984.

The new look Frontline sparkles with new design ideas, needles the laggard and fights many a public battle. The cover is impressive.

A. S. Raj
Bangalore

I was very much impressed by the magazine in a completely new look, especially the colours used and the cover.

Manik Chand Dey

I congratulate the Frontline editorial team, the design department, and Garcia Media on their effort to provide a new look to the magazine.

The new look of Frontline is reader friendly and impressive. What makes it different from the other magazines is its content. The new look keeps it intact.

P.A. Jeyan
New Delhi

It was a pleasant surprise to see the new design of Frontline. The articles in the magazine deserved a world class layout. It is achieved now.

Dushyant Thapa
Darjeeling

The magazine looks splendid. But I think it could do with some more changes. It would be good to include more doublespread photographs like you did for the Cover Story "On a mission to India".

The captions for the photos are very small and very light in colour. The colour used for interview questions is also dull.

Joseph V. Satish
Chennai

The new format is breathtaking.

Shabari Kumbh

I applaud the courageous efforts of Frontline to highlight the communal forces' designs among the tribal people in the Dangs area of Gujarat ("Festival of fear", March 10).
